Celebrate all things Valentines in this playful workshop! We'll explore the history of the holiday from Saint Valentines of Rome in the 1st century, to winged Cupids to a global show of affection and appreciation. For our sweet phase, we'll decorate 6-8 heart sugar cookies with royal icing, working on wet-on-wet techniques. For our salty phase, we'll work with a yeasted dough to shape and bake heart shaped pretzels, then dust with chunky sea salt. We can't wait to get creative with the group!

What to Expect: In this workshop we'll decorate Valentine's themed cookies and learn sugar cookie decorating basics: flooding, wet-on-wet layering, and detail work. Cookie stations will have six to eight sugar cookies, bags of royal icing, and themed finishing materials. Boxes will be provided to take home the finished product as well as a special packaging option for a teacher Valentine's Day gift. We will also work with a soft, yeasted dough to shape into 4 pretzels. Kids will assist adults in boiling and baking the pretzels. Kids can then brush the pretzels with warm butter and decorate with sea salt to take home. Kids will learn about yeasted dough, rise times, boiled breads and the surprisingly rich history of pretzels!
Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult. Chairs will be available if parents want to stay. Price is per child per class and payment is required at the time of registration. Parents/caretakers are kindly asked to register children at least 24 hours in advance. If a parent/caretaker needs to cancel a class, refunds will be given only if we are notified 24 hours in advance.
Your instructor: Katie has been baking for friends, family and strangers as well as teaching adults and kids, professionally and as a volunteer for the past several decades. This workshop combines her love for all things family baking with her experience homeschooling. Along with operating a home bakery, she has created 12 unit studies on the history of art, from cave paintings to Cubism. She is excited to explore the intersection of expression, independence and cookie art with your child!
